ABSTRACT
The aim of this article is to assess the socioeconomic factors influencing mortality among men and women aged 20 to 35 in the Far Eastern Federal District (FEFD). The study is based on principles of economic demography, human capital theory, and the sociology of youth. An econometric analysis of panel data across FEFD regions for 2017–2022 was used. The study's data base included data from Rosstat and the Center for Demographic Research of the Russian School of Economics (CDR NES) of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation. The study's results showed that socioeconomic factors significantly impact the mortality rate of young men starting at age 20. Inflationary pressure and high crime rates were identified as the main factors driving mortality in young men. Furthermore, the development of entrepreneurship, rising incomes, increased access to healthcare, employment, and vocational education significantly reduce the risk of mortality among young men of working age. Unlike men, socioeconomic factors influence women's mortality from an older age (25 years), as they begin living independently later. Women's mortality risk increases with lower levels of education. While higher levels of education reduce the risk of death in women, no such association is observed for men. Women with secondary vocational education have a higher mortality risk than men with the same level of education. Job loss, however, is a significant determinant of mortality among young men. The study's results will improve the accuracy of demographic forecasts and the effectiveness of strategic documents for the socioeconomic development of the Far Eastern Federal District.
